Making Your Own Garden Trellis
May 9th, 2010 by Jane R.
If you’re interested in creating your own trellis for your garden or backyard patio area, then keep reading for some good ideas. This is one of those projects that you can’t really screw up, it is just a matter of finding the right materials to use to give you the look you are after. You may not want to make your own garden trellis and just stumbled across this article. That’s fine too. You’ll still likely enjoy some of the ideas presented and maybe get some tips about choosing the right type of trellis for your garden or patio.
The first thing you need to figure out is what type of look you are going for. Do you have a more formal looking garden area or a more country-rustic theme? This will help shape your ideas and may even make building your own a questionable endeavor. If you are one of those people that just stumbled across our site and you are looking for a more formal trellis design, then go to Plow and Hearth for ideas. There, you might find that wrought iron or forged piece you are looking for.
But, if you’re still interested in designing your own, let’s get into some ideas now. So, there are really two basic types to discuss. First, you’ve got the wooden trellis. There are many styles from which to choose, but a simple design can be made using a nice wood like cedar or redwood. These are best because they will stand up to the weather and the elements. Pressure treated woods are an option, but because of their toxicity, it is not recommended that they be used in a garden where you may be eating the vegetables or herbs. They can also leach chemicals, so you should take precaution on where you use this type of material.
You could also use twigs and sticks from some trees on your property to make a more eclectic or rustic looking trellis. This would work best for smaller and lighter plants or climbing vines. You will also need to consider spacing the pieces of your trellis so that the smaller plants will have enough support to climb. Likewise, if you have a more hardy or sturdy plant or climber, then you’ll want to make sure that the trellis has enough strength to support them as they mature. If you plan on having these plants get quite a bit taller and more mature, you might consider an arbor as a more appropriate structure. Well, hopefully, that got your creative juices flowing and gave you some ideas on how to make your very own trellis for your garden.
